When a police officer is killed, apparently by two armed robbers of "middle Eastern" appearance, Muslim Detective Zane Malik uses his connections in the Arab neighborhoods of Sydney to track down the youths involved. Malik's search for the truth brings him into a head-on clash with old-school Detective Sergeant Ray Crowley, who accuses Malik of putting his community before his job.

Bad drugs are being sold on the streets of Redfern. A local Aboriginal leader and anti-drug crusader is trying to get the drugs off the streets when he is shot. Some say he has been assassinated. Malik is determined to discover the truth - but Crowley has a personal stake in the case which may hinder the investigation.

Two Lebanese youths and a schoolgirl are killed in a drive-by shooting. Inspector Wright appoints Malik to run the investigation, but this doesn't sit well with Detective Sergeant Crowley.

The brutal slaying of a Vietnamese couple in Cabramatta is carried out amidst the stress of an Internal Affairs investigation. This time it's Malik in the hot seat. Whatever he says to the "toe cutters" will affect Crowley's future too.

He's suspected of being an arms dealer, but the only way to get the truth is to get inside. Malik agrees to go undercover, leaving a gap in the Major Crime investigative unit.

Inspector Wright juggles professional and personal problems, as her own brother is the target of a hitman.

Meanwhile, a respected transplant surgeon is murdered. Malik's wife, fed up with his obsession with work, makes a startling decision.

When a truck driver is killed and a haul of fertilizer stolen, Malik and Skerritt fear a possible terrorist attack. The race is on to find the men responsible. Is this event connected with the car bomb that killed Agent Angleton? Malik knows he must do everything in his power to stop another catastrophe, including using his connections in the Muslim community and putting his life on the line.

The investigation leads Koa and Malik to a Somali man who is rumored to be recruiting Somalis to return to Africa to fight for Al-Shabaab. Meanwhile, Internal Affairs investigates the shooting of Mahmoud, an accessory in the armed robbery, which causes conflict between Malik and Travis.

The double murder of a Jewish couple leaves few leads. According to the woman's son, a large amount of cash is missing, along with the Palestinian student who was living with them. But the woman's son is lying about critical evidence, and the conflict between the two detectives, Travis and Malik, spreads from the Middle East to the unsolved crimes of multiple murder and armed robbery.

Inspector Wright becomes personally involved in a case when a young woman is found raped and murdered after getting into a taxi. The suspect is the same man who had previously walked on a similar charge, and now Wright sees an opportunity to put the man away for a long time. Meanwhile, Malik works to find the gang responsible for the armed robbery.

Detective Sonny Koa is enlisted to help the son of a friend, Sam, who's involved with Maori gangsters. When the kid is implicated in a violent robbery, Sonny must walk a fine line between his obligations as a cop and his obligations to his community. Meanwhile, Malik is focused on nailing the armed robbery gang. He has a suspect in custody who knows the truth, but he refuses to talk.

Malik hopes that a visiting Afghan cop can provide some answers to the mystery of the armored car robbery and its connection to a massacre of civilians in Kandahar. But the visitor is killed before Malik can talk to him, and Detective Travis is behaving erratically. Detective Lim undertakes her own investigation to discover what he's trying to hide from her and the rest of the Major Crime team.

Two youths are shot dead while fishing. When another body is discovered in nearby waters, it seems the boys were killed because they witnessed an execution. The case is connected to the armored car robbery, and Malik discovers Travis knew one of the dead gang members when they served together in Iraq.
