Born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, Melissa Barrera began her career during her last year of high school at the American School Foundation of Monterrey. Moving to New York, she auditioned and was accepted at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Leaving NYU in 2011 after being selected to participate in the Mexican reality show La Academiea, she made her debut guest appearance as Zulamita in the 2012 series La mujer de Judas, and directly after that was offered her second role as the young ingenue in the telenovela La Otra Cara del Alma.
