Set in 1920s rural Chile, the story follows José Luis Echenique, a deranged and abusive landowner who rules his estate, "La Querencia," with an iron fist. His empire of terror is threatened by the return of Manuel Pradenas, a revolutionary outsider who falls for Echenique's oppressed wife, Leonor.
