Marcella - Season 2 is confirmed!

It’s good news from ITV Studios, as they have now confirmed a second season of the brilliant Marcella is going ahead with a plan for it to be shown on tv sometime in 2017.

At the time of writing this article, that’s the best I can confirm for an airdate, but I’m gonna speculate that it’ll be sometime in Spring, as this was when season one aired. It has also been confirmed that it’ll be an eight episode second season, just like the first one. Netflix have also confirmed they have the global streaming rights to the series, once it has finished airing on ITV in the UK.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, renowned screenwriter and novelist, Hans Rosenfeldt, Buccaneer Media CEO Tony Wood and leading actress Anna Friel shared the good news during a panel session with industry executives.

Hans Rosenfeldt, creator & writer, said “I was delighted at the reaction to the first season and am thrilled to be revisiting Marcella for ITV. In the second season, the audience will get the opportunity to spend more time in her world, further exploring some of the characters and getting to know them better.”

Tony Wood, Executive Producer, added “The combination of Hans’s masterful writing, Anna’s gripping performance and Buccaneer’s superb production team struck a chord with viewers. Naturally we’re delighted to be working with ITV to create a second season of Marcella.”

Marcella has been commissioned for ITV by Controller of Drama, Victoria Fea, who said “The audience reaction to Marcella was incredible. We’re delighted to be confirming a second series and to be working with Anna, Hans, Tony and Nicola on a new story. Hans created a compelling character in Marcella and the audience are keen to know what happened next,” she added.

Details of guest casting will be announced in the coming months.

Never heard of the show? Here’s a quick rundown…

Marcella is set in contemporary London and was created specifically for a UK audience following the success of Rosenfeldt’s BAFTA nominated show The Bridge which has been sold to 120 countries across the world.

The series is told in Rosenfeldt’s often dark Nordic style and is produced by Tony Wood who created the mega hit The Only Way is Essex.

Season One delved into the psychology of the troubled detective Marcella (Anna Friel) as she returns to the Met's Murder Squad after a 12-year career break. With the abrupt end to her marriage to the love of her life Jason and isolated from her daughter at boarding school, Marcella returns to work whilst attempting to make sense of what's happened in her life.

By coincidence a spate of recent killings have occurred which bear the hallmarks of unsolved murders committed over a decade ago. The killer was never detected and more bodies have been discovered with the same method of killing.

Still not convinced? Ok, here's a trailer:

Did you watch the first season & if so, did you like it? How much are you looking forward to season 2?
Please, do share your thoughts and views, below. I look forward to reading them.
