Thus Far on "The Good Wife"

Thus Far on"The Good Wife" is undoubtedly one of the shows I look forward to every single week, which makes it increasingly annoying that CBS moved it to Sundays and that it is constantly pushed back because football always runs over its allotted 16 hour slot. But that's neither here nor there because, despite this, I still watch this show.

I feel like CBS has decided that they were going to either get the best writers or pay "The Good Wife" writers the most because during commercial breaks it's fairly easy to see how awful some of the other CBS shows are doing from the awful "Scorpion" which just is rife with cliches that they can't even hide it within the commercials to "The Millers" which thankfully got cancelled, to the cleavage ridden, stereotypical "blonde" moments of "2 Broke Girls", a story of girls who only hold one job and somehow live in a pretty large NYC apartment. Needless to say, the only reason I tune into CBS is because of "The Good Wife".

For those who don't know, Julianna Marguiles stars as Alicia Florrick a stay at home mom turned attorney turned partner turned running for state attorney, who finds herself after the affair of her husband came to light and he served a subsequent prison sentence. The best features about the show, I think, is that it looks real. The acting, the writing, the Shakespearean-ness to it, one episode you're rooting for someone, the next you want them to fail. People change and as do their opinion on them, so why shouldn't characters change? "The Good Wife" does this exceptionally well while also covering some very important topics such as sexual assault on campus to the encumbered system that involves the deportation of an illegal immigrant. This show continues to stay relevant, and if the writers know what they are doing, it will continue to do so. It is also one of the more progressive shows out there.

It involves a female lead who, unlike "Mysteries of Laura" the audience isn't confused as to how a woman can juggle her home life and her work life, she just does it. It also includes a variety of minority individuals while also within that a complex ambiguity when it comes to sexuality, which isn't done for cheapness, I think, but rather because humans can be sexually ambiguous. Some of the better moments in the show, are when Alicia stands up for herself and it is incredibly invigorating to see a female on television do something like that and not stop doing it. Alicia is complicated, as are all humans, but she knows what she wants and will see it through to that point. She doesn't want the ideal marriage, she doesn't want a man to take care of her, she wants to win, which some individuals may view that as un-sexy and cold but if a man can want it, why can't a woman?

"The Good Wife" is a show worth watching because, I believe, it shows an unadulterated study of humanity and how our society changes and shapes a person, be them female, homosexual, African American, or Caucasian. Everything, the writing, the story, the development, is done with such an intent to portray humanity as it truly is, that this show deserves to be watched. If you watch everything else on CBS, please stick around for Sunday nights at 9:00 because this show deserves your attention.
