Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is Truly Unbreakable

23108.jpgCorny as that title is, this show is fantastic. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt tells the story of Kimmy (Ellie Kemper), who is one of the Indiana mole women, a group of women who were lured and then eventually forced to stay in a bunker in Indiana, as she takes on New York City. Moving in with her gay African American roommate Titus Andromedon (Titius Burgess) and dealing with possibly drug addled landlord Lillian (Carol Kane), Kimmy tries dating, working, and just living in general. She eventually lands a job as a nanny for Jaqueline Voorhees (Jane Kakowski), 30 Rock alum, and attempts to befriend her stepdaughter Xanthippe (Dylan Gelula) as she grapples with the changes that have occurred for the past few decades from teenage sexuality to cell phone sexting. A comedy created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is fantastic.

The writing for this show, is spot on. You really have to be paying attention to keep up. Ellie Kemper is also fantastic and she plays this character to a T, strong yet silly, Kemper maintains Kimmy to a T. Titus is also fantastic and I'm surprised to have never seen him elsewhere because of how good this show is.

I would also noted that I think it's closed to Community in comedic then 30 Rock, in that a lot of the jokes are very quick and the world the writers are in must be immersive for them to think through every scenario in order to make them funny.

This show also has a nice feminist tinge to it. The intro is an auto-tuned remix of a news report in which a man describes women as strong and unbreakable while scenes of young girls being girls are played throughout. The episodes themselves are titled, Kimmy Goes to School and Kimmy Goes on a Date, reminiscent of a girl's television show and Kimmy does exactly that. She goes on a date, she does go to school, but while on the date she realizes that she doesn't want to be in a relationship with an old man specifically for his money or just attend school, she wants to learn. In each of these episodes, Kimmy displays strength of character that is pleasant to see in a show with a female lead. The episode titled Kimmy Goes to the Doctor has Kimmy go to a plastic surgeon because she doesn't like her face and wants to hide from her past and realizes halfway through the episode that beauty comes from within and that she was going to make a drastic change to her body because she was dissatisfied with another aspect of her life.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is hilarious, well-written and a welcome change to some female led comedies. Check this show out and let me know what you think!

One of the most endearingly funny shows I've ever seen. You could tell it would be a hit from the very first episode.

I totally agree with what cleancaffeine said, "after watching this [show], the theme song will be stuck in your head for at least a week!" That is so true. :)
