Check out Mozart in the Jungle and You're the Worst!

At this point there are a number of shows that are coming back, starting up, and ending so, as an avid television bnge watcher, I've had to find some things to fill the time. One of those things is Mozart in the Jungle, an Amazon original that is an indie-darling and utterly fantastic. 10 episodes are available if you have prime, half an hour show, and I finished it in under week. Because I was bored? Nope. Because it's really good, funny, and again, I love this, a realistic depiction of what it means to be in your mid-twenties in New York City. Yes, believe it or not, Girls does not convey how hard this city is to live in and I love it when shows like Broad City and Mozart in the Jungle get it right. It's a hard city but it's also utterly fantastic to live in and I want to live here for as long as she'll have me. But enough about my love of the city, watch the trailer!

The reason I love this show is because not only the great actors that are involved within it, Malcolm McDowell, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jason Schwarzman, briefly, John Hodgman, hilariously briefly as well, and great lead Lola Kirke. Mozart in the Jungle is created by Jason Schwartzman, Roman Coppola who also directs one of my favorite episodes, and Alex Timbers. Seriously, the episode is titled You Go to My Head and it is a stand alone masterpiece. It moves the plot forward minutely but there are a number of long shots throughout accompanied by some fantastic color correction that give this episode a dream quality. I was fascinated by it and got chills talking about the arks that occur throughout the episode and the themes. It was excruciatingly well done. So, if you have a moment check out this show. Also, check out You're the Worst.

Just as an aside here, for those who have been reading my articles and wonder where I get some of my recommendations from, I listen to a podcast by Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan of Grantland called Hollywood Prospectus and they dissect music, television shows, movies etc. And recently, this week, they recommended You're The Worst. I also got the recommendation for Catastrophe from them but to the best of my knowledge, those are the only two show recommendations I received from the podcast. But, I digress.

You're the Worst is similar to Catastrophe in that we have a British ex-pat living in Los Angeles who meets a girl yadda yadda yadda, except not quite. Check out the trailer!

First off, let me be clear, I've only watched one episode BUT all of them are available on Hulu and right from the starting gates this show is hilarious and original. The writing appears realistic and the sex scenes are quite fantastic throughout. I also have to say that the interaction between Shane Francis Smith and Chris Geere, who looks like a British version of Glenn Howerton, is weird and hilarious. Like a better twist on Two and a Half Men, which I've never seen nor will I ever. The show just felt authentic and spastic which is the way I like my humor. So check it out and let me know what you think!

Also, don't watch Minority Report. Just don't. You're better then that. Wilmer Valderrama is in it and I just couldn't take him seriously. I love sci-fi and I enjoyed the movie but this lacked everything the movie had. I watched about 10 minutes of it and then watched You're The Worst and felt much better.

Youre the worst was fantastic in the first season, season 2 has hit a lull for me.

Both of these shows look as if they could be good fun to watch. Will have to try a few episodes of each to find out though.

"you're the worst" has gone from nice & original & brave (in a way) to cliché & boring/conservative within a few episodes only (i think), i'm more looking forward to s02 of "man seeking woman" actually, a show that kept its high level of total weirdness throughout the first season. while remaining true to its "original premise". kind of.
