Fresh Off the Boat is Back and it's Better Than Ever!

59006.jpgFresh off the Boat season 2 premiered recently and it doesn't skip a beat. I am a huge fan of this show, not only for the 90s nostalgia, but because I appreciate a little diversity in my television watching experience. Like, Marco Polo, which wasn't great, but got some respect for the diversity of their cast members. For those who don't know about Fresh Off the Boat check out the trailer and see for yourself.

This show is most definitely worth watching for all the reasons I mentioned and one other, it's hilarious. The writers are fantastic for this show, creating characters that are often heart warming and random at the same time. One of my favorite characters is Brian played by Dash Williams. I don't know who writes for him, but I want to meet him. He is one of Eddie's school friends and has the most random and obscure lines and I just wish there was a super cut of his scenes. One of my favorite scenes occurred recently in season 2 when everyone shows up to school after summer vacation and Brian comes dressed as The Mask in the yellow suit saying, "Smoooking" and "Somebody stop me" and nobody gets it.

Constance Wu is also worth mentioning here because, like all family shows, she toes the line between the smothering mother and supportive mother with hilarity and ruthlessness. She is exceptional in this and her cold hard stare is the yin to Randall Park's yang which is his goofy grin.

The part about this show that really stands out to me is how they play with some tropes while dismissing them. Yes, Eddie's Dad may appear to be disinterested in his children but he care enough to explain to Eddie what sex actually is and I love the way he does it. In that episode, it's also worth mentioning, that episode didn't revolve around the overused scenario in which the parent figure explains sex in an unusual way and spend the entire episode trying to warm up for the talk. Not Eddie's dad, he dives right in. The show also explores racial identity as well as class identity as well as the issues surrounding a new school and a new neighborhood.

If you haven't checked the show out, you should. And if you have, what are your thoughts on it?
