Ratings Roundup for the Week of April 2, 2023

ABC had a quiet week. American Idol added a second night, with the competition show drawing a million more viewers over The Bachelor in the same slot. Station 19 was down one hundred thousand viewers. Grey's Anatomy dropped four hundred thousand viewers. Not Dead Yet returned after a two-week break even with its last new episode. The Company You Keep also had steady viewer numbers. Chances of either show getting a renewal are slim, but Not Dead Yet has a bit of an edge in ratings that might keep fans' hopes alive.

CBS took one last bite of the NCAA basketball apple last week. The championship game was up compared to last year's event. The FBI shows ran a three-hour cross-over event last week. The good news is the event pulled up the ratings for FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted. The shows picked up a million viewers each compared to their last new episode two weeks ago. The bad news is, the time slot shift for FBI was an expensive loss, costing the program almost a million viewers. SWAT picked up one hundred thousand viewers. Still no renewal news for the police drama. The sticking point is likely cost. The show is in its sixth season so renewal will be based more on if the production can figure out a way to cut costs since the ratings have been good enough for the renewal of a Friday night show. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the show could flip to Paramount+, similar to SEAL Team a few years ago. The shorter seasons would help with production expenses.

NBC wrapped the first season of Quantum Leap last week, even with the previous week's viewer numbers. Night Court picked up a few ratings hundreths, but its viewer numbers were down one hundred thousand sets of eyeballs. Lopez vs Lopez lost ratings ground, but its viewer numbers remained steady. American Auto was up one hundred thousand viewers, while Grand Crew lost another hundred thousand viewers it couldn't afford.

FOX announced last week that The Resident was cancelled after six seasons. Once again, cost was likely the deciding factor. HouseBroken shed one hundred thousand viewers off its premiere. Its cause wasn't helped by the fact the rest of the Sunday animated block was currently in repeats. Animal Control picked up a few ratings hundreths, but its viewer numbers were even. Call Me Kat picked up almost an entire ratings tenth, and one hundred thousand viewers.

The CW had a quiet week. Penn Jillette announced on his podcast that Penn & Teller: Fool Us was renewed for another twenty episodes. It's unclear if NextStar plans to spilt that across two seasons, or have one long season of the show.  Superman & Lois picked up one hundred thousand viewers to take the top spot on the ratings chart last week. The Flash was also up one hundred thousand viewers, while Gotham Knights was steady. Riverdale picked up a ratings hundredth, but its viewer numbers remained unchanged. The Great American Joke Off lost one hundred thousand viewers off its series premiere.

Hey, LadyShelley! Thanks for this week's ratings roundup! I've been meaning to ask. The ratings and the absolute number of viewers are taken into consideration by the networks when they make their decisions on the fate of their shows. I believe there are others things that are taken into account as well. But between those two numbers, which one weighs more on a network's decision to cancel or renew a show?

At one time I would have said the rating held higher sway in decision-making. These days, there are only a few ratings tenths separating the highest and lowest-rated shows on a network. (Chicago Fire had a 0.55 rating while Grand Crew was at 0.20 as an example.) Not a lot to really base decisions on. I suspect these days they look more at the viewer numbers than the rating, and production costs. (Fire had nearly 7 million viewers while Crew barely scraped a little over a million) Even if you compare strictly comedy shows, Night Court had nearly double the ratings and viewers as Grand Crew. In either scenario, things don't look good for Grand Crew. :)

We could also add "Share" into the mix, but that would really confuse things. LOL!

Remember the actual show is the bait. What the networks want you watching are the advertisements. That's what pays their bills. It's just some bait is more enticing to people than others.
