Summertime, and the living are dying

It’s summer time at Camp Stillwater, it’s the 1980’s, there’s a bunch of teens at the summer camp, people are starting to die, dead bodies (And animals) are everywhere, there’s a creepy janitor & the teens tell “Scary stories” round the camp fire……. No, it’s not another remake of Friday the 13th; it’s the new series airing on Freeform, Dead of Summer.

Created by Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis and Ian Goldberg, this ten part supernatural horror series follows Amy Hughes (Elizabeth Lail), who is the new girl of the group.

In the first episode, "Patience", Camp Stillwater is about to reopen after being closed down for years. Deb, the new owner, has thrown her heart, soul and life savings into renovating the camp she loved as a child.

Six former campers (Alex, Jessie, Cricket, Joel, Blair and Blotter) join her as counselors hoping to experience the freedom that camp brings now that they are older.
Not part of the old crew, Amy is not just new to Camp Stillwater, but to camp in general. Amy tries her best to fit in with the already tight group as everyone settles in and prepares for the campers' arrival, Amy is the first to get a feeling that something is not right with this idyllic summer camp…..

It wasn’t a bad opening episode, but it was filled with a lot of cliche's that you’ve seen in pretty much every horror movie before. The episode spends quite a lot of time introducing the characters and there's flashbacks to previous things that happened to them in the past.

In the second episode, “Barney Rubble Eye”, the campers arrive to Camp Stillwater and quickly Alex and Blotter realize one of their new charges, Anton, is going to be a handful. With the tendency to wander off into the woods talking to himself, Alex and Blotter think the shy kid just has an imaginary friend. But when Anton starts talking about “the Tall Man” and communicating cryptic messages to them, they begin to wonder what lurks in the woods around Stillwater.

Again, this episode is filled with a lot of cliche's and some very over the top “Creepy” music to add a bit of tension. And the “Tall Man” is weird enough to make you want to know more about who he is and why the boy sees him.

After only watching the first two episodes, I’ve decided I’m definitely gonna keep watching it. Sure, it’s not the best show you’re gonna watch this summer, but it absolutely won’t be the worst either! If you enjoy the cheesy horror movies from the 1980’s, you will probably enjoy Dead of Summer.

Here's a trailer for the series, for anyone still not sure about watching it or not

Dead of Summer airs Tuesdays at 21:00 on Freeform. Please, do share your thoughts and comments about the show, below. I look forward to reading them.
