Born in York, Pennsylvania, Craig Sheffer began acting in regional and state high school drama competitions at the age of 15. Moving to New York City in 1980 he hit some hard times. Eventually he found an agent, began picking up small acting jobs in commercials and in 1982 was cast as Ian Hayden on the ABC daytime soap opera One Life to Live
