Investigation Team 1 is called to a scene where a middle-aged man is found at the bottom of a 4m pit. They see it as an accident and assign the case to Sgt. Nogawa, the Takuma investigation team's liaison. He brings them in, and Takuma finds a stick nearby. The victim,Tomoyuki Itano, was walking his dog before going to bed, as usual, as seen in a security camera video. The stick was thrown to the dog by someone out of camera coverage. A playing card found in Itano's wallet has the first character of his name on it, along with an aphorism. Autopsy results show that a blow to the head and not the 4m fall killed Itano. Thus begins "Mayhem at the Toy Company."

Having solved several major cases in Kyoto, Yoshio Takuma's "Special Investigation" squad is broken up. Following clues to a mysterious criminal organization, Takuma relocates to Tokyo. In a not-yet-converted storage room, he is introduced to his partner Maria Azuma, a zealous detective wit connections in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. A detective from Investigations, Sgt. Nogawa, is introduced as a go-between. The first assigned case is that of an apparent suicide. Naoto Shinguji, a one-book writer was found hanging in a "locked room," though he was also stabbed! I this a murder instead of a suicide?
