Organizing Guest Cast by Category - Part 2

Tonks wrote 9 years ago: 1

Sorry David, i wish you were not so quick in locking threads if we may have suggestions after you implemented something. Maybe betatesting would be a good idea so that a few could tell you if it's good and then you're done with it ? I'm not saying me, cause since i participate so little for the time being, i don't have the credibility, but others might be of help...

First, thank you for implementing it such an improvement !

Though i think the display could be a bit better, but that's nothing.

My problem is it doesn't propagate to the main episode page, and it should be there as well. So that the main guests show first, and not the ones with more "popularity" (cause that could be nurse 3 or firefighter 4 etc).

Would you mind putting this in the pipeline ? I'm not asking it to be done yesterday or tomorrow, we waited a long time for this anyway, so i'm okay with waiting, but I believe it would be a good idea to show this as well on the main episode page even if you limit (which I still disagree with but won't argue the point) the number of guest listed on that page.

Since the original thread was locked...

I also appreciate the improvement. But if nothing else, the display is a bit odd with the indenting on the left-hand side. Sometimes, at least.

I'd also agree with it propagating to the main episode page.If "popularity" isn't an issue, it still seems to be random who does and doesn't appear on the main episode page.

I agree with you both, it should also appear on the main episode page this way :)

The left-hand side I do not find odd tho :)

cheers
Juan

The left-hand side thing looks odd because it's inconsistent between the main episode page and the guest cast page.

It's also inconsistent because sometimes it's indented and sometimes it isn't on the same page. For instance:

http://www.tvmaze.com/episodes/487783/supergirl-1x...

Last night this was indented over, now it isn't. Is there some reason it would realign itself in the last 12 hours?

Are you using an ad blocker?

I do, and it's indented, but it's not indented on the main episode page, so i'm not sure why it is on the guest cast page as it didn't use to do that and i was using an adblocker before too.

Yes. But... why would a page first indent, and then not indent and stay not indented?

If I see another indented page, I can turn it off for that page and see if it makes a difference.

david wrote 9 years ago: 1

Then I'm pretty sure that's it. It works fine for me, but I just tried with an ad blocker and I get the indenting you're talking about.

Gadfly wrote 9 years ago: 1

But then why doesn't the indenting happen consistently? I'm not seeing it now on a half dozen castf pages I go to.

I'd also think that it would work the other way around: an ad would push the text to the right, and the lack of text would let it "snap" back to the border on the left.

Anyhoo, the ad-blocker doesn't seem to be affecting the views too adversely, if it only happens in very rare cases. Just wondering about the inconsistency.

An adblocker works by removing parts of a page entirely. Every pageload you potentially get a different ad, and I'm guessing only some of them are blocked, breaking the layout.

For now, we won't actively bother users with ad-blockers. However, we do depend solely on advertisement income, so I'm sure you all can understand we can't give support in cases like this either.

We are quick to lock threads in a (mostly futile, haha) attempt to keep things organized for us. Always feel free to open a new thread if you have additional comments, like you did here. :)

I chose not to implement the grouping on the episode's main page, because it would take up too much space there. However, what we could do is to add the sorting based on type there, without showing them separately.

No problem. Please keep in mind that some of us access from work computers, where we have no choice in whether an ad-blocker is applied or not. :)

That would seem to work.

What sorting mechanism is currently used when all of the cast members are equally "popular"?

None, so undefined.

Well, the number of minor credit characters typically out numbers the more important ones, so on average, that's going to mean a lot of (relative) chaff are on the main episode page.

So something pushing SGStars and Guest Stars there would definitely be helpful.

+1 :)

I did try turning off Adblocker on my home computer, and it didn't make any difference when I found a page with the indenting.

http://www.tvmaze.com/episodes/173507/the-man-from...

Here's another page with similar indenting.

http://www.tvmaze.com/episodes/487783/supergirl-1x...

I do have various anti-spyware programs on my laptop, but I've shut down my browser and restarted it with Adblocker for Firefox turned off. Oddly, I'm not seeing any advertising with Adblocker turned off, regardless of whether it affects the indenting.

To the best of my knowledge Adblocker is the only anti-ad program I have on my computer. So it would seem something else is causing the indenting. If it's the anti-spyware stuff... well, I'm not going to turn that off.

david wrote 9 years ago: 1

If you're not seeing any ads on TVmaze at all, you have an adblocker... somewhere.

Tonks wrote 9 years ago: 1

Could we go back to my main request, though ?

You haven't said if you're considering propagating to the main episode page where it is sorely needed.
