Please don't re-fix non-English episode titles ;))

MAT13 posted 4 months ago

Hiya there,

When non-English TV shows have official episode titles in their own language, we don't force English translations instead. Please don't rename back to English episodes for "My Demon". You can see episode titles on their official site, but what's more, it is in the each individual episode as well.

Here is a screenshot I captured for episode 6 to have as proof: https://www.tvmaze.com/images/1220751/je6hoe-sulebakwi-sog-eulo-image-1220751

Sometimes Korean episodes (well almost always) have episodes in Korean, but for those that have more than just "Episode 1", the title should be as is.

Another example: https://www.tvmaze.com/images/1180717/chapter-3-gongbeom-image-1180717

Same thing for Japanese shows, like below:
- https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/495/naruto/episodes

Each episode has clear title in Japanese, and not as some subtitle. Since Japanese TV station is original airing, then episode titles there are used. I think the policy is where it originally airs is what we use for primary title.

Kind regards,
MAT

Hello, MAT.

The fact is that I read on our forum (someone asked, and Juan answered) that if episodes of series whose names are written in hieroglyphs or Arabic script have an official source with English-language names, then it is preferable to use those names. Korean series often have their titles available on Netflix, which is one of the producers and owners of the content, so the Netflix pages for Korean shows can also be considered official (they often contain episode synopses and pictures for the episodes). And there are English titles of all episodes. So, if you want, you can ask again on the forum what is the priority.

Personally, I think that Korean episode titles in the presence of English ones are much less informative and, as they say, hurt the eyes. But I am ready for consensus.

Netflix Korean shows may be exception to those that first air on Korean TV channels. But if the episode has official embedded title in the episode, then English titles are basically translations, not original titles.

But I guess it English Netflix airs them the same time as Korean Netflix, meaning if the episodes are available in English at the same time for the first time, then this may be work but simply because as you say, may be easier on the eyes, not more correct. But if Korean version aired first, then whichever version airs first has preference. Later translations can be added as alternate lists.

I don't use it, but I know there are alternate episode listings available on the site for such cases. So Even if primary titles are in Korean, you can still create English one. Wouldn't that be the best solution?

I've seen in the past people add it both ways, but that sometimes takes too much space and doesn't really look too good. In this case, titles are short so it may work well, I dunno.

I've talked about this several times in the past, especially before I went on changing episode titles like for Detective Conan and such that have over 1000 episodes, back to original Japanese, since English translations are just translations and didn't air at the same time but later.

I guess in term of Netflix, if it's released globally at the same time, English could be used as primary, but it is not original but basically translation. And often translated English titles are completely different in meaning (i.e. like in Naruto, lol).

I remember season 2 of Pasion de Gavilanes telenovela being added with English titles since that too was available, but its original titles were in Spanish so those too were changed... https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/23677/pasion-de-gavilanes/episodes

Sometimes people add Japanese titles but written in latin, which is easier to read to people who can read latin alphabet even if they don't know the meaning. That is wrong of course since that would never be the title in those countries written like that, but this site has little-to-no limitation in letting people add things as they wish or think are the correct.

While I may prefer original titles, I did not go about deciding and doing stuff on my own without verifying with David and the others a couple of times first.

I know that if there is official English title that is aired same as non-English, then English is used. So in term of Netflix if English version was available at the same time, I guess it can be used. But even so, it's still just a translation by someone. Would be more convincing if they changed the actual episode title image in the show.

So, just the fact that official English title exist doesn't make English preferential, it's basically which one aired first. So, if My Demon was available in US and Korea same time, then I guess you could use English titles if it bothers you. Although I think alternate episode listings exist for such cases so episode listing can be written for different countries. Would be cool if multi-language episode listings exist, used can simply select which to display instead of a default language one. Maybe that is something to suggest to David, hm.

Kind regards,
MAT

Yes, let's, in order to avoid disagreements and disputes, raise this issue on the forum, let others also speak out :) Can you create a separate topic and duplicate your entire post from our correspondence there?

It just seems to me personally that if Netflix is the main co-producer of the entire show (and for most Korean series available on it, this is the case, and episodes appear almost simultaneously with the showing on Korean channels, sometimes the difference is only a few hours), then its pages for these series can also be used as a full-fledged analogue of the official ones (since we take pictures and synopses for all episodes from there, why should the titles be separated from this?).

Amazon did it again!

It's so nice that The Legend of Vox Machina is getting more attention, especially since I feel like working on that page is a bit of a slog sometimes...but when you changed the dates for the release, they are not the same as the ones on the official website. Which is so typical of them, Amazon is always doing this, saying that they'll release on the 5th and then release on the 4th instead. Anyways, inspite of their little bait and switch, Amazon does put the episodes out a day early, https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Vox-Machina-Season-2/dp/B0B8SCQJ9H. Thank you so much for the page update though, you are awesome! :)

Yes, I know this, and have long been accustomed to the fact that Amazon releases a lot of series half a day earlier, but still, as a rule, on Friday, so the dates must correspond to the release time throughout the global network, and this is already considered the next day. Because if we set the previous date, then the release time adopted on our resource for all Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Hulu, Disney+ series (12 hours) will be significantly ahead of events and show that the episodes have already been released, although in fact before their release is still half a day.

That's so weird...Amazon, why are you like this?

I owe you for the screenshots of the episode titles. I keep waiting for someone to change the titles to Netflix generic titles. You just made it a lot easier to prove. Thanks!!!

I'm regularly checking for Temple season 2 episodes on Torrent websites and for some reason I still can't find any, and I happened to see your screen caps on them.

I'm only wondering if you're are watching them on Sky Go and if so, then, nevermind my message :)

The screenshots were taken from the official site, but nevertheless, I have already watched the second season of the series. In our country it was translated and released in our language, not English. So this is unlikely to help you with anything :)
