Better Call Saul is.....surprisingly good.

21709.jpgBetter Call Saul is a show that I've been following since it's creation. Now I am an individual who does not like spin-offs, unless they are incredible, so incredible, in fact, that they can nearly stand on their own. Better Call Saul is one of these shows, wherein, it is so fantastic that I truly believe it could stand on it's own.

Better Call Saul is a show created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould and is based around Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk. The show, three episodes in now, shows glimpses of Saul post Breaking Bad, but the main focus of the show appears to be Goodman's time prior to meet with Walter White.

The show begins with Goodman using his former name of Jimmy McGill, a struggling public defenders who tries to help his sick brother Chuck, played by Michael McKean, and eventually has a run in with nefarious Tuco Salamanca, played by Ramond Cruz, a return character from Breaking Bad. Through Mr. Salamanca, Saul meets Nacho Varga, played by Howard Hamlin, who appears to be a reoccurring character within Better Call Saul and who has a fairly dangerous proposition for Mr. Goodman.

The thing I truly love about this show is that Saul's character is a character that I can get behind. He's a public defender who is struggling to make ends meet, he has a terrible office that is the size of a closet and it appears that he sleeps there too, and he doesn't even really want to associate himself with the criminal element, at first, I presume. He's the underdog. He also saves the lives of two individuals with whom he knows nothing about.

I note this because I already like his beginning more then Walter White's. Spoilers Abound for those who haven't watched Breaking Bad. Walter goes into the meth making business because he wants to make money to cover his hospital bills, to have some money left over for his family, and because his ego has been damaged. Walter is a high school chemistry teacher who was kicked out of a company that went on to make a lot of money and he works part time at a car wash where he is constantly disrespected. He went into the business because he wanted to prove himself and because he wanted to make money.

Saul Goodman is a public defender who manages to save the lives and potential maiming of two individuals who he met a few moments before. He also seems to come across as way more humane than Walter White especially with the PTSD he seems to be experiencing when he hears the bread sticks breaking. Granted, we haven't seen Saul "break bad" yet and I imagine he will make a lot of decisions that I may not agree with, but, already I enjoy his beginning better than that of Walter White.
