You Need to Watch Last Week Tonight!

22241.jpgLike The Daily Show? The Colbert Report? Well you will love Last Week Tonight with John Oliver because it's like those shows except better. Now I'm not knocking them because Last Week Tonight is better for reasons that they have no control over.

First off, John Oliver can curse and he does. He calls out politicians, celebrities, presidents, anyone who he feels is acting stupidly he calls them out and curses them out. There is something revealing about a show host calling people out for their stupidity.

He also has a lot more lee way to do things like this because there are no advertisers who may become upset with what the show is saying or broadcasting because, it's HBO. This allows Oliver to immerse himself into politics in a way that I haven't seen from The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. For example, John Oliver did a segment on net neutrality and provided the link to the FCC website and broke the website. He has also brought the twitter-verse's attention to Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa who hosts a weekly show, like John Oliver, in which he berates individuals who criticize him, like teenagers on Twitter, and dances with clowns. Yep you heard that right a president of a country dances with clowns on live television.

He also brings attention to aspects of this country that I nor other viewers I know, knew about. Like the Cuba trade embargo, or the oddity that is Greece's Finance Minister, or the the policies surrounding the lottery, or the Miss America Beauty pageant. He reports news that I haven't seen anywhere else which is why I tune in every week to watch him.

Which is why I think you should too. He's critical, informative, funny, and hopeful. He discusses issues that effects everyone men, women, minorities, children, anyone. He recently commented on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, wondering how it still existed, drawing everyone's attention to the sexism within the magazine.

This show is fantastic and unveils a side of news that I often times never knew about and it's a fantastic show to watch. So check it out.

I have to disagree with Hershal. John Oliver does not talk down to his audience. I think Hershal's confused "talking down to someone" with being plainspoken. True, if you disagree with the point he's making, it is going to be a little uncomfortable to watch. Especially when he piles one solid argument on top of another in support of his position. That's the whole point. But Oliver is never condescending towards those that might disagree.

There is one thing I dislike about what John Oliver is doing on Last Week Tonight compared to Jon Stewart. He talks down to his audience, and this makes him look arrogant especially to those who might disagree with him. Jon Stewart was great because even people who disagreed with him liked his show.

I was visiting New York last year and I saw ads for this show, and I thought it was really interesting, then one night I actually caught parts of an episode and I was hooked, I've got a bit of catching up to do, I agree with your conclusion
