"Daddy Issues" - Wynonna Earp S03E11 Review

And so with "Daddy Issues" we get some answers and things happen. We still don't find out anything personality-wise about Bulshar. He's big and bad and evil. And he has something in his DNA that lets him control the beekeepers. But that's about it.

Let's edge into the rest of the spoilers slowly. Nicole and Waverly check Charlie's body after Doc killed him last episode. After Nicole leaves, Waverly touches Charlie's neck and he apparently comes back to life due to her touch.

Nicole evacuates Purgatory, claiming there's a forest fire coming. Robin is helping her, having been deputized. Wynonna still can't see the stairs to the Garden but Waverly has gone there. So Wynonna punches her unconscious, tosses her in a tool locker, drives her to Purgatory, and makes Charlie promise to take Waverly far away. Because Nicole and Waverly didn't tell Wynonna Doc killed Charlie last week.

Some Revenants, led by a guy we've never seen before named Jarvis (Suresh John), enter the station and find Bobo. He begs them to let him out, but they don't because he's betrayed them in the past. Bobo does tell them Wynonna doesn't have Peacemaker. They leave, confront Wynonna, and take her prisoner and then take her to Bulshar. Bulshar is hanging out at the abattoir with his new "wife" Mercedes. So apparently Bulshar grabbed Mercedes at the end of last week.

Wynonna offers her fealty to Bulshar if he'll spare Waverly. When she tries to touch Bulshar, Bulshar backs away nervously and orders Wynonna to be locked up. Wynonna figures her touch is lethal to Bulshar because of the curse he put on her (the "price of magic"), and convinces Jarvis if they kill Bulshar then they end the curse for the Earps and the Revenants. Mercedes switches sides so fast it'll give you windburn, and they Free Wynonna. She kills a Revenant who doesn't go along with her offer, and Bulshar does a disappearing act before Wynonna can touch him.

Doc, who may or may not be possessed by the Fire Witch from last week, wants to drink more of Charlie's blood. He glamours a hapless couple that came into Shorty's, then texts Kate and the two of them feed on the now-willing couple. Kate is disgusted by the whole thing but sticks with Doc. They go to the fire station and confront the Fire Street, who provides them with his phone so Doc can track Charlie's GPS.

When the fog rolls in, Charlie takes Waverly to the greenhouse where she was born. There's an angel statue there, and when Waverly touches Charlie with the ring he gets flashbacks to when he first entered Purgatory as an amnesiac. And then when he and a Young Michelle kissed. And *spoilers* we realize Charlie is Julian, Waverly's baby-father and Michelle's angel lover. Charlie throws Doc into an angel statue and sprouts wings. He tells Waverly they can't be bothered with petty humanity anymore, and her light drew him to the Triangle.

When Doc wakes up later, Waverly and Charlie are gone. He finds a sword in the remains of the statue.

The wounded Kate manages to call Nicole on the radio. Nicole takes Kate to the Gardner house and binds her wound, and Kate discovers her Tarot cards that were predicting death now show hope.

At the BBD office, Bobo and Robin are still bonding over their love of music. Jeremy leaves to get some more beakers from his home, and Robin goes with him. Once they're gone, Bulshar arrives and offers Bobo a position at his side as his first lieutenant, and Bobo accepts.

(What is it with "J" names on the show? There's Jeremy, Julian, and now Jarvis.)

And there's a scene of Wynonna, Mercedes, and the Revenants marching down the street as Jeremy tells Robin that they need a miracle.

Bulshar is still thin as paper. But the rest of the episode was pretty good. We finally got some answers about who Charlie is. Although I can't say it came as a surprise that he's Julian. Charlie pretty much had to be, or there was no point in bringing him on the show and then killing him off so abruptly.

I'm still liking any scenes between Michael Eklund and Justin Kelly.

Mercedes (Dani Kind) doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose in the storyline. I still like the character. She's the sniveling Grima Wormtongue of Wynonna Earp, and at least the actress has fun doing it. And it's always uplifting to see the hero bond with the lesser enemies against a Big Bad. Not only does it make sense, but the Revenants have been reduced to background noise most of Season 3. So it's nice to see them doing something. Even if the resistance Jarvis predicted (because Wynonna has killed so many of them) amounts to one Revenant, Rolf (Ryan Luhning) who is pretty quickly dispatched. Because they haven't played up the Earp Curse much this season, it seems to come more out of the blue and the quick convincing doesn't help.

We do get a nice bit when one of the Revenants, Keith (Nick Wensrich) comes up to Wynonna when Bulshar forces her to play waitress, and shyly takes a drink from her tray. I always like it when we see the Revenants used to be human beings. Even Rolf has a weird bit where he likes making Wynonna dress up in his dead wife's dress.

Tim Rozon is still deliciously evil as either the Maeve-possessed Doc, or Doc high on angel blood from when he fed on Charlie last week. Plus now he has the sword, which is presumably Charlie's angel sword. It looks like we find out more in the second episode. Angels are a bit overused on genre TV (Supernatural, and anyone remember Dominion?), so we'll see what the creative team does with Charlie in the second episode.

Greg Lawson as Randy is reduced to a voice on the radio. Although it looks like he does more in part 2, at least near the end.

But that's all my opinion, and I could be wrong. What do you think?

-----

I'll watch the second episode, "War Paint", and write up a review hopefully in a bit. See you then.
