A Million Little Things Pilot Review

423632.jpg“Friendship isn’t a big thing, it’s a million little things.”

So begins abc’s newest drama A Million Little Things. The words embraced by Jonathan Dixon (Ron Livingston), he seemed to have lived for his friends and loved ones. A better friend than most will find in their lifetime, he pulled soon-to- be father Eddie (David Giuntoli) aside to tell him plainly he needed to quit drinking if he was going to be the father his family deserved, and believed in Regina (Christina Marie Moses) so strongly he bought her a restaurant. Jonathan was by Gary’s (James Roday) side as he battled cancer, and championed Rome’s (Romany Malco) dreams of finally making his own film instead of directing mediocre commercials. Jon seemingly had everything: a wonderful wife, great job, and good friends. Which is why it was a shock to all when after closing a business deal, Jon places his phone down and jumps from his office building to his death.

As they mourn their friend they all try to understand why. Which is where the mystery begins. We watch as his secretary hides a folder Jon left for his wife and delete a dozen files from his computer. We discover the affair Eddie has been having with Jon’s wife, Delilah (Stephanie Szostak). Which leads them to wonder if they were the cause or could’ve done something to prevent this.

The entire cast is strong. They displayed a natural chemistry and relatable struggles. As the characters lives unfolded there wasn’t one false moment. The most powerful moment comes when Gary is demanding to know, if everything happens for a reason, why Jon died. What good came of that? It is then Rome confesses that had he not gotten the call about Jon he would’ve been dead. At the very moment Jon jumped, Rome had composed a suicide note and was standing over the kitchen sink with a mouth full of pills. A heart-wrenching and cathartic confession so beautifully and honestly expressed by Romany Malco, is what finally brings the men closer and starts a real and long overdue dialogue between them. It is this confession that brings out the best in them and has them displaying the million little things Jon always knew were so important.

A Million Little Things will bring tears and laughter, but most of all it will bring audiences a new outlook that may very well change their lives.

Watch A Million Little Things Wednesdays at 10pm on abc.
