Carl has always struggled with his looks: He is so handsome that no one takes him seriously. Prejudice hits him hard. In order to show that he is a man of depth, he easily takes things too seriously and becomes an esoteric philosopher that no one understands. Carl's logic is not quite like the others', but there is a logic there.
