Shao Lin is what the students in the Red Guards call a "genuine" physicist who they believe "knows the truth." She earns this identity by denying her true scientific beliefs in order to escape the awful brutality she's seen befall counterrevolutionaries during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Shao Lin publicly stands against her husband to save herself, an act that's witnessed by their daughter, Ye Wenjie, who's in the audience.
