Thundarr The Barbarian was born into slavery / a prisioner of war, and spent most of his youth uneducated. It is unknown what happened to his family, and is very untrusting of others. Princess Ariel contributed to his freedom. When the two finally met, she began to teach him about his surroundings including the ancient historical background of the shattered monuments they encounter. Thundarr has immense courage, thwarted only temporarily by gasping out phrases such as "Lords Of Light!" and "Demon Dogs!" before resuming his battles. His strength is unmatched, wears warrior-like clothing, and facial expression displays a tough, no-nonsense personality. As there were many live action movies, including Star Wars, that depicted numerous men as courageous warriors around the time that Thundarr was completed, the producers made absolutely no attempt to make Thundarr gentle and preachy like subsequent fighters He-Man and Captain Planet became. Thundarr carries a Sun Sword which continues the tradition of men carrying magical swords that can do anything. In this case, as Thundarr is constantly a warrior, the Sword does not transform him into one, but instead, not unlike Lion-O from Thundercats, amplifies his powers and abilities. It is bonded to him; He is the only one with the necesarry skills to use the sword. The Sun Sword continues to rest if somebody else steals it. However, doing so means that Thundarr could be overpowered by artillery from an enemy. The Sun Sword also needs to be energized occasionally. Otherwise it is completely indestructible. Thundarr is also similarly gifted regarding science and technology.
