Mrs. King is recently divorced and lives with her mother Dotty, and would occasionally bicker with each other. This would later be used to develop the characters of Deanna and L'Waxana in Star Trek. Amanda is a scout master and a typist, saying she can type in at least one layout over 90 Words Per Minute "if you count the mistakes.". The reason why she got divorced is the usual "Nobody is ever home." excuse. Her ex husband Joseph (Sam Meville, from The Rookies) is supposed to be an attorney which bothered Amanda why he was gone way too much for that job. It turns out that he is a Secret Agent, which is what Amanda was recruited into as well shortly after their divorce. Lee Stetson begged and pleaded with her to carry out his assignment as he was in a hurry to get it done. Amanda was delighted to find a new job, but Lee, who recently lost one of his partners, was not interested. Also, another partner Francine insisted that Amanda keep away. However, it turns out that their supervisor desperately needs somebody to pose as a suburban housewife to carry out numerous assignments. Amanda has the ability to think quickly and unconventionally in order to save everybody's lives and defeat the villains under the simple guise of being accident prone and scatterbrained. One example of many is: Without a moment to spare, she gently yet sternly tells them to pull the blue wire to disarm explosives by remembering how troublesome dishwashers can be. She also has the ability of stunt driving in her large Station Wagons, which alternate in every episode ... including one that is a Ford L.T.D., another one that looks like a customized Oldsmobile Ninety Eight (not supposed to be a station wagon), as well as a Jeep Wagoneer. However, she is aloof about driving manual transmission vehicles. In Season Four, she is able to get a full time job as a Secret Agent and behaves more as Jill and Sabrina. She has a desk in the main area as well as a much smaller desk in the Film Library department. Amanda's family also gradually is more involved with The Secret Agency by attending their stage rehearsals, one of Amanda's sons being abducted by an enemy Spy, and Dotty falling in love with a wanted man. After Joseph remarries, Amanda and Lee get married as well, and she moves in with him. Amanda's sons stay with Dotty as they take their time to welcome Lee in their lives.
