Jack Tripper is a former YMCA resident looking for a new home in the beautiful beach view apartment complex. In his younger years he was into partying, and joined a party for Eleanor Garvey being engaged for marriage. With rent due, the two other residents of the unit want Jack to stay with them, agreeing to try out Jack's professional cooking. However, Jack is constantly at odds and even bullied by a landlord Stanley Roper because he hates young people, refuses to yet young unrelated adults sleep in the same unit together. Despite containing three mattresses, their unit has a coed bathroom. While begging Stanley to let Jack move in, Janet accidentally says that Jack is homosexual, and now has this unexpected reputation. Not long after, Helen Roper finds it difficult to believe this reputation, but keeps it secret anyways because Stanley won't change his opinion ... even using hand gestures in front of Jack. While the new landlord Ralph is friendlier towards Jack, Bart is the majority owner of the company, and has the same opinion as Stanley regarding unrelated young people living together.
Over the years Jack continues to cook, take classes, and starts a bistro. His likeness is Robin Tripp.
