The Penguin's real name was never revealed (in comic books it is Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot). He is a supervillain, a genius who seeks to construct criminal plots that can withstand Batman's attempts to thwart them. Often, he succeeds early, frequently trapping Batman and Robin in elaborately lethal devices. Penguin's theme is birds. His henchmen are often given code names related to birds in some way, and his crimes frequently center on birds. He is probably the sanest of Batman's enemies. He usually dresses in a tuxedo and tailcoat, with an atypically magenta top hat.
Producers liked Meredith's work as the Penguin so much, they made sure they always had a Penguin script in inventory so they could film an episode whenever the frequently busy Meredith became available for shooting it.
