Danny's mother Stephanie is extremely supportive of his swimming, wanting to give him the best opportunities; she dutifully drives him to training every morning and afternoon. She is passionate though never quite fits in with the other mothers, whom she aspires to be friends with. As Danny's swimming obsession increases, so does Stephanie's investment in her son's success. She is unwavering in her belief that Danny will one day make it and this often causes friction between her and her more pragmatic husband, Neal.
