Over-population, economic woes, political rebellions - 19th century China was nearly as rough as the west. So when news of the Gold Rush reached China's shores, many men decided America was truly their land of opportunity. Lung Hay was among the many thousands who left his wife with the promise of returning rich, only to arrive in California to find menial labor in ramshackle mining towns.
