Kalliope is a free-spirited Greek woman who comes to the U.S. as a mail-order bride. Henry Grey pays for her, but Kalliope ("Callie" for short) quickly grows impatient with the restrained Henry and his religious mother who is against all forms of revelry. Callie goes to the neighboring farmer, Rud Saxon, and agrees to buy his wife.
With some prodding from Paladin, Henry eventually goes to a dance where Callie is at and tries to dance Greek-style with her. She is convinced that he's the man for her and goes back with him.
Callie is very prideful, and insists that she can cook and clean as well as any American woman. Although often headstrong, she typically does the right thing, as when she initially convinces Rud to pay Henry back the $237 that Henry spent to bring her to the States.
