Chaplain Robert April

Originally played by John Larch, later by Larry J. Blake.

Robert is a chaplain at a prison, who operates a library but refuses to provide the convicts with more than minimum service. When Roy Carter is unjustly scheduled to be hang, Paladin shames Robert into helping him stand off the warden long enough for Roy's pardon to come through. Robert is inspired to do more and later, one of his librarian convicts escapes. The chaplain pursues him into the mountains in the dead of winter. The convict, Eddie Clinton, turns on Robert at every turn, taking his supplies and leaving him to freeze. Paladin and Roy rescue Robert, and when they find Eddie insists on helping Paladin to pull the sled with the convict and the wounded Roy back. They succeed, but Robert dies of exposure and Paladin buries him.
