Before the war, wide-eyed Tommy is just a typical seventeen-year-old boy growing up in a small town - earning a few bob as a delivery boy, teasing his little brother. Cheerful and good-natured, his decision to secretly sign up is possibly his first ever act of rebellion against his parents. But, like his friends in the trenches, Tommy has to grow up fast, discovering reserves of courage and a steadiness that make him a rock to those who fight alongside him. Over time, propping others up takes its toll on Tommy, who needs every last ounce of courage he has to get himself through the war and back to those he loves.
