Cyprus

Nearly half a century ago, following a decade of conflict, the small Mediterranean island of Cyprus was split in two. Greek and Turkish Cypriots, who had lived side by side for generations, were separated by a Buffer Zone. This was the so-called Green Line and it remains in place to this day, patrolled by United Nations Peacekeepers. The war touched every Cypriot and displaced nearly half the population but its most painful legacy is the thousands of Missing People killed during the fighting. This compelling programme features rare access to the sensitive work carried out by the Committee of Missing Persons. We follow their teams of scientists as they try to find, recover and return the bones of Cyprus's Missing People. We meet people from the two communities determined to rebuild trust on the island, including those who are breaking the last taboo - marriages between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
