The Battle of Teutoburg Forest, contested in 9AD, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed Roman legions and their auxiliaries. Rome's eventual defeat not only stopped the growth of its empire, but also created the Latin-Germanic divide that persists in Western Europe to this day.
