The ending was pretty spectacular, will give the show a chance!
The timeline and the ages of the characters seem to really diverge from the novels. The age difference I can see to cater to a specific audience. I also found the Chatwins' being such young children in the novels lacking credibility. It looks like they went through quite a bit of the first novel in only the first episode. I was hoping for more of an exposure to the teachings of magic. Those chapters were my favorite.
Slow start but horror ending. Will give it a chance.
