Everyone gathers for Edith and Bertie's wedding on New Year's Eve. Anna suddenly goes into labour in Mary's bedroom and gives birth to a son. Carson realizes his illness will ultimately prevent him from performing his duties, and tenders his resignation; Robert reluctantly accepts, and suggests that Thomas return as Butler. Carson can retire with a pension, retaining an oversight role, which pleases all three. Violet accepts that Cora has taken over her prime position within the family, and they reconcile.

Downton Abbey mostra a mudança dos tempos e como somos obrigados a nos adaptar; mostra a eterna luta pela felicidade, pelo amor; mostra (com muita formalidade) valores que devem ser mantidos e ensinados a nossos filhos, o principal, lealdade a quem permanece ao nosso lado nos momentos mais difíceis. Mostra ainda a ascensão da mulher na sociedade e ensina que não somos mais nem menos que qualquer um, apenas diferentes.
