Jim's bad back has him on prescription pain pills which has him in an altered state and opens up an opportunity for the family to share information which usually would upset him.

Imagine Disney making a show about coercive control and calling it a comedy, and you've got this show. Jim is actually an abhorrent human being who unsurprisingly has no friends but poor Andy, who he constantly abuses. His wife has to abide by a ridiculous set of rules and is constantly ridiculed because being a homemaker and the mother to his five children is not working hard in his eyes. This show became worse as it progressed and by the time 2009 rolled around they had no new ideas either. An absolute waste of the talent in this show. It certainly hasn't aged well at all.
