The museum was purpose-built to house the collection of Josephine and John Bowes, and in the picture galleries experts Elizabeth Talbot and Paul Laidlaw pick out some gems to value; among them are an ecclesiastical chair and an intriguing carved coconut. And Paul Martin visits Towton, the sight of one of Britain's bloodiest medieval battles.
