'Premio Lo Nuestro' will pay tribute to iconic Paquita La Del Barrio with special performance

Univision announced today that Premio Lo Nuestro will pay an emotional tribute to the iconic Mexican singer and songwriter of rancheras and boleros, Paquita la del Barrio, who left an unforgettable legacy in popular music. The tribute will be led by Pepe Aguilar, along with his children Leonardo and Ángela Aguilar, who promise a memorable performance that will celebrate the life and career of the beloved singer. This recognition of one of the most authentic voices in music will take place during the Premio Lo Nuestro broadcast on Thursday, February 20 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT across Univision, UNIMÁS, and ViX.

Paquita la del Barrio, whose real name was Francisca Viveros Barradas, became an icon of Mexican music thanks to her unmistakable style and empowering, direct lyrics that championed women’s rights. With hits like “Rata de dos patas”, “Tres veces te engañé”, and “Me saludas a la tuya”, Paquita won the heart of the public and became one of the most loved and respected artists in the music world.

The tribute to Paquita la del Barrio will be performed by Pepe Aguilar, one of the most recognized figures in regional Mexican music, accompanied by Leonardo and Ángela Aguilar, who have successfully carried on the musical legacy of the Aguilar family.

"Honoring Paquita la del Barrio's legacy is a great responsibility and a true privilege for me. Her voice was an echo in the soul of our people, and her bravery in telling stories paved the way for many generations. I have always sought to keep the essence of Mexican music alive, and Paquita was a pillar of that essence: authentic, real, and powerful. May this tribute be as meaningful as the depth of her spirit," stated Pepe Aguilar.

On her part, Ángela Aguilar said: “Paquita la del Barrio taught us that a woman’s voice should never be silenced—she always sang what she felt, without fear or excuses. She turned heartbreak into art, pain into power, and through her music, she gave many of us the courage to speak our truth. Honoring her legacy is deeply moving because, like so many women, I’ve found strength in her words. This tribute is more than a celebration of her music; it’s a promise to keep that brave spirit alive and continue amplifying the voices of women everywhere.”

Ángela added: “I have been surrounded by powerful women my whole life—whose strength, resilience, and passion have shaped who I am. Paquita la del Barrio personified that strength, breaking barriers and giving voice to those who needed it most. Her music was not just art; it was empowerment. Honoring her legacy is more than a tribute—it’s a reminder of the power that women have in our culture and our music.”

Leonardo Aguilar concluded: “With a career that spanned over five decades, Paquita not only left a deep mark on ranchera music but also established herself as an influential voice in popular culture. Her legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans worldwide.”
