Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Phil Donahue is known as the man that created audience-participation TV talk shows in 1967, and it was done by accident. A studio audience that had come to watch a variety show that had been canceled, were invited, by him, to watch an interview with celebrity Madalyn Murray O'Hair, and were allowed to ask questions.
