Born in Berlin, Elke Sommer moved to Great Britain after the death of her father, learned English and made ends meet working as an au pair.Eventually she returned to Germany, began modeling, and while on holiday in Italy, won a beauty title, catching the attention of a film director. Her debut film was in the 1959 Italian feature Uomini e nobiluomini, and gradually upgrading her status to European sex symbol. Relocating to Hollywood in 1964, she soon became one of the top actresses in both cinema and television.
