Born in Rudkøbing, Denmark, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau graduated from the Danish National School of Theatre in Copenhagen. In 1993 he landed the role of Christian in the TV movie Slaget på tasken, followed by the role of Martin in the 1994 film Nightwatch, which brought him fame in his native country. His United States debut film role was in the 2001 war film Black Hawk Down, playing Medal of Honor recipient Gary Gordon.
