Lyal Brown

Lyal Brown, writer and storyteller, found a new and eternal audience on January 6, 2008. Born in Medicine Hat, AB. Nov.1, 1929, he died in White Rock, B.C. after a long battle with Parkinsons disease. Lyal had many careers in broadcasting: fiction writer, documentary maker, host, director, network executive and partner in a film company. He was equally at home in television, radio and theatre. In addition to creating and writing his own television series, Ritters Cove, his credit can be found on close to 200 other programs, including ``The Albertans'', The Beachcombers and A Terrible Beauty Is Born. The Lyal Brown Collection of Canadiana (radio profiles and interviews) is in the National Archives of Canada. His hobbies included playing several instruments, singing, sketching in pencil and oils - and telling a good yarn of course. Predeceased by his parents Ena and Oliver Brown and his son Kirk, Lyal is survived by his wife and writing partner, Barbara, his children Sharyl, Heather and Gordon, his grandchildren Nick and Koral, and his sisters Lorna and Carol, as well as relatives and friends around the world. His pen may have been plagued by Parkinsons but his imagination never slowed so he has moved on to a bigger venue.
