Born in New York City, New York, Sofia Coppola made her film debut as an infant, playing a baby in her father's film The Godfather in 1972, at age two she made an appearance in The Godfather Part II. She enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts to study Fine Arts, and transitioned into filmmaking in her directorial debut with the 1999 drama The Virgin Suicides.
