Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mitzi Gaynor was raised in a musical family and started performing as a child. She was just 19 when she debuted in the 1950 film My Blue Heaven, and was one of the last stars from the heyday of the Hollywood musical when she retired from films with her final movie role in 1963s For Love or Money.
