Born in London, England, Dev Patel began training in Taekwondo in 2000, competing in both national and international championships. In 2007 he landed the role of Anwar in the cult series Skins, completing his A Levels at Whitmore High School while working on the series. The following year he was chosen to play the lead role in the film Slumdog Millionaire.
