Adel Kelany

Adel Kelany (Born: 3 September 1972 in Sohag, Egypt) is an Egyptian archaeologist, chief inspector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), Aswan regional delegation, in charge of the Department of Mines and Quarries.

Since 2005, he has been mandated by the SCA to lead the work in the western concession of Wadi Abu Subeira (Aswan region, Egypt), where he has discovered, among other things, rock engravings attributed to the Upper Paleolithic. These engravings make Wadi Abu Subeira a site of the Qurta cultural group, the oldest rock art in East Africa.

Adel Kelany is the author of various publications on this subject and has obtained a 3-month mobility grant from the Research Institute for Development in 2024 to come to France.

He is hosted at LAMPEA for 2 months, in June and July 2024, to work with the laboratory's researchers, the team of the Préhistoire(s) de la Méditerranée collection (Presses Universitaires de Provence) and the team of the Digital Humanities platform on the publication of a volume devoted to the predynastic engravings of the western concession of Wadi Abu Subeira. This volume is the second in a general study devoted to this valley, published at PUP with the support of LAMPEA.
