Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Freya Mavor grew up in Edinburgh, and also spent four years of her early adolescence in France before moving back to Scotland. She began her career on stage with the National Youth Theatre, and was also a mezzo-soprano with the National Youth Choir of Scotland. She made her professional debut in 2011, when she landed the role of Mini McGuinness in the seventh season of Skins.
