Born in Point Reyes, California, Fairuza Balk was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia and landed her first TV role at the age of nine in the 1983 TV movie Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Two years later she was beginning a two-and-a-half year term at the Bush Davis Performing Arts School in the United Kingdom. She lived two years in Paris, appearing as Cecile in the the 1989 movie Valmont, returning to live in Vancouver before moving to Hollywood in 1992.
