Born in St. Louis, Missouri, James Gunn began making 8mm films at the age of twelve, the first in which his brother Sean was disemboweled by zombies. While earning his MFA at Columbia University in New York, he took a part-time job with the famed B-movie studio Troma Entertainment, where he was given the opportunity to write the screenplay for the 1996 film Tromeo and Juliet.
