Born in Houston, Texas, Joshua Leonard started shooting editorial photography for a magazine at age 16. His interest in the early '90s indie films led him to enroll in a short course at the New York Film Academy, after which he continued his film education, borrowing equipment on weekends to make short films on his own. He auditioned for, and landed his debut role of cameraman Josh Leonard in the unexpectedly successful 1999 film, The Blair Witch Project.
