Raymond Gilmore Allen, born in Kansas City, Missouri, was best known as Ned the Wino on Good Times, Woodrow "Woody" Anderson on Sanford and Son, and as mechanic Merle the Earl on Starsky and Hutch. He retired from acting in 1985 due to illness.
