In the first episode of Tough as Nails, which aired on July 2 at 8 p.m. the contestants are introduced with half from the United States and the other half from Canada. The contestants are welcomed to the show by Martin Short, who announces along with Phil Keoghan that the show has been filmed in Canada for the first time after COVID protocols were lifted. The first task that was set for the contestants was to cut up 500 pounds of scrap metal with each piece not being any longer then 20 inches. The ones who could do it the fastest would win and get the right to choose the teams of Dirty Hands and Savage Crew. Ben and Paul won the challenge, and Ben chose to pick contestants for the team of Dirty Hands, which consisted of Cheryl, Kenji, Todd, Carly, and Yesi, while Paul chose contestants for Savage Crew, which ended up being Akeela, Jessica, Dustin, Marcus, and Carolina. The next day was the first team challenge where the contestants had to wash, dry, and repaint the hull of the boat that they had traveled on. Kenji was selected as the crew boss on his team Dirty Hands, but turned out to be too detail-oriented, so Savage Crew won the first team challenge.
